I have been re-reading Harry Braverman's Labor and Monopoly Capital. In the introduction he talks about the soul-deadening nature of assembly line work, especially in the auto industry. It occurs to me that perhaps the best statement ever made on this is Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times, made in 1936 in the depths of the depression. Here is a clip
