Transit Dollars Flow for GTA

Very good news yesterday as the Ontario government announced $9 billion in funding for transit expansion in the GTA. This includes money for the Eglinton Rapid Transit running from Pearson to Kennedy Station, including a portion from Keele to Leslie running underground. Smaller projects include a Vista dedicated bus line along Highway 7, in North York, and extension and upgrading of the existing LRT and an additional light rail transit line on Finch.

It is not clear at this time how this will affect the Sheppard light rail line, and how this changes fit in to the overall Metrolinx plan. But this is very good news for a GTA faced with increasingly inadequate transportation infrastructure.

It is also very intelligent fiscal policy from a Liberal government that usually seems directed by political expediency much more than good public policy sense. Rather than opt for easy fixes such as road infrastructure, the McGuinty government appears to be using the current recession to create the type of infrastructure that will serve the GTA during coming decades of growth.
